Causes of pimples in eyelids and how to treat them

Pimples inside the upper eyelid can cause pain, irritation, discomfort, and even affect vision. This may be a sign of a stye or blocked oil glands. If not treated properly, the pimple can swell and lead to infection. This article will help you understand the causes and effective treatments for this condition.

Causes of Pimples Inside the Upper Eyelid

The main cause of pimples inside the upper eyelid is the blockage of the Meibomian glands. These glands secrete lipid-rich oil to protect the eyes and prevent the tear film from evaporating. When blocked, the oil flows backward, and some sebum may enter the surrounding eyelid area. This gradually accumulates and forms raised bumps in the eyelid.

Additionally, not thoroughly removing makeup or rubbing the eyes with hands can allow Staphylococcus bacteria to enter the eyes, causing styes.

How to Differentiate Between Styes and Chalazion

Styes and chalazion are common eye issues, but they have different causes and symptoms. Here’s how to distinguish them.

Styes (Hordeolum)

  • Cause: Infection of oil glands or eyelash follicles, often caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
  • Location: Appears on the edge of the eyelid (outer) or inside the eyelid.
  • Signs:
    • Red, swollen, painful, may contain pus.
    • Often has a white or yellow head resembling a pimple.
    • Causes tearing and a gritty sensation in the eye.
  • Progression: May burst and drain pus after a few days.

Chalazion

  • Cause: Blockage of Meibomian glands in the eyelid, not caused by infection.
  • Location: Typically inside the eyelid, either upper or lower.
  • Signs:
    • Hard lump, swollen but less or no pain.
    • No pus head, no redness or inflammation like styes.
    • If large, may cause eye irritation or blurry vision.
  • Progression: May resolve on its own or require medical intervention if prolonged.

Safe and Effective Home Remedies for Eyelid Pimples

Most mild cases of pimples inside the eyelid resolve on their own within about a week without requiring a doctor’s intervention. Treatment can be effective if you follow these methods:

  • Warm Compress: Use a warm towel on the eyelid. The warmth helps open up the oil glands, reducing blockages effectively. Apply the warm towel for 5-10 minutes per session, 3-4 times a day. Also, regularly clean the eye area, especially during makeup removal or when wearing contact lenses.
  • Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes with your hands.
  • Refrain from wearing makeup or contact lenses until the pimple heals completely.

Note: If the pimple becomes too large and shows no signs of improvement after 1-2 weeks, consult a dermatologist for safe and effective treatment options.

Simple Prevention Measures for Chalazion

If eye hygiene is not maintained regularly, chalazion can recur frequently. To minimize the risk of pimples inside the eyelid, adopt the following daily habits:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes or face.
  • Make it a habit to clean contact lenses with disinfectant solutions or specialized lens cleaners.
  • Never skip makeup removal and facial cleansing to remove dirt and makeup residue before bedtime.
  • Avoid using cosmetics of unknown origin or expired products. Do not share makeup with others.
  • Do not attempt to press or squeeze pimples inside the eyelid, as improper handling may lead to infection.
  • Lastly, avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands.

Pimples inside the eyelid are considered benign. Although benign, they can cause discomfort, irritation, and eye pain, or in severe cases, require treatment at a dermatology clinic for timely intervention by a doctor.
