Medically reviewed by Dr Quynh Trang, Dermatologist (HCMC) · Updated August 1, 2026

The fastest way to treat inflammatory acne

Calm the inflammation first — the opposite of what most people do, which is press on the lesion until something comes out. At WeDo Skin Clinic in Ho Chi Minh City (District 1 and District 2), a dermatologist examines and scans your skin free of charge, then matches the method to the severity: an anti-inflammatory spot injection from 100,000đ per lesion when one angry bump has to go down before an event, LED light therapy from 330,000đ per session for redness spread across the face, or an MV course at 1,250,000đ–1,600,000đ per session when new lesions arrive faster than old ones clear.

The mechanism explains every recommendation below. A follicle blocks with oil and dead skin cells and becomes a sealed, low-oxygen pocket, ideal for C. acnes to multiply. Your immune system floods the area with white blood cells and the vessels dilate; what you feel is that response, not a reservoir of pus waiting to be released. Squeeze, and the pressure travels wherever resistance is lowest: the thin, inflamed follicle wall. It tears inward, spreading bacteria sideways into healthy tissue — which is why a lesion you failed to pop tonight is usually twice the size tomorrow, and why the wider that spread, the more collagen is lost. Lost collagen is what leaves a depression once the skin heals.

Medical-grade acne extraction performed under sterile conditions

Recognizing inflammatory acne: red bumps, pustules, and blind pimples

All three look like “a red swollen spot”. They differ on the one point that decides what to do today: whether a head has formed.

Red inflammatory bumps (papules)

The early stage — a raised, firm, red bump, tight and slightly sore, with no head. Treatment works fastest and costs least while the lesion is still shallow. This is also the stage at which people reach for a needle to see whether anything is inside, turning a spot that would have faded into an open wound.

Pustules

Dead white cells and bacteria collect into a white or yellow point at the surface. Pustules hurt more than papules and look ready to be popped, but a head at the top does not mean the base underneath has stopped being inflamed. Pressing one still tears the follicle wall; you simply feel reassured because something came out. Once a head has genuinely formed, medical-grade acne extraction is done with sterile instruments and the inflamed base treated separately.

Blind pimples (no head)

A diffuse inflamed mass under the skin, tender to press and sometimes lasting weeks, with no visible head. No head means no outlet, so squeezing achieves nothing except rupturing the follicle wall and driving inflammation deeper — precisely how dark marks and pitted scars are made. Reduce the inflammation first; once the reaction is controlled, the contents very often resolve without extraction.

Inflammatory acne vs. cystic or nodular acne

| Factor | Inflammatory acne (this page) | Cystic / nodular acne | |—|—|—| | Depth | Superficial — epidermis and upper dermis | Deep — extends into the lower dermis | | Sensation | Red, swollen, mild to moderate pain | Hard lump, significant pain, possible deep pus | | Scarring risk | Lower if treated early and correctly | Higher, more likely to leave pitted scars |

The boundary is not fixed, which is the argument for acting early: superficial inflammation picked at repeatedly, or left uncontrolled for months, can descend into nodular and cystic lesions. If what you feel is a hard, deep lump that never develops a head, that is more likely cystic acne, treated under a separate protocol on its own page. For how the clinic grades every stage, see the broader medical acne treatment program.

For expats and visitors in Ho Chi Minh City

Consultations at both clinics run in English, and the dermatologist who examines your skin is the one who explains the plan. The first visit is diagnostic and free. If you are here short-term, say so when you book an appointment: an injection, LED or IPL session leaves no downtime before a flight, while an MV course only makes sense if you are staying long enough to finish it.

Cost depends on how many lesions you have, their severity, and the method your dermatologist recommends after examination. The skin scan and consultation are always free.

Why no single all-in figure? Two people who both describe themselves as having inflammatory acne can be far apart: three sore bumps before a wedding, versus both cheeks inflamed on top of years of old marks. The first may need one injection; the second, a course and monitoring. Your dermatologist gives you the number after the scan and before you commit. All services are quoted and paid in Vietnamese đồng; the full price list covers every other service.

The technology

How it works

Fast anti-inflammatory spot injection

The doctor delivers an anti-inflammatory agent directly into the lesion, dosed case by case. Because it acts where the inflammation is rather than travelling through the whole body to get there, the reaction shuts down quickly. Indicated for one or a few large, painful lesions, or when a lesion has to flatten before a specific date. The needle is very fine, so the sensation is usually a brief sting. This is a per-lesion procedure, not a course: most lesions flatten within 1–2 days, no downtime. 100,000đ–300,000đ per lesion by size.

LED: Celluma and Photocare Premium

LED: Celluma and Photocare Premium

Acne bacteria produce molecules that absorb blue light; under the lamp, those molecules drive an oxidative reaction that destroys the bacteria inside the follicle, while red wavelengths reach deeper to calm the inflammatory response. That makes LED light therapy a good fit for mild-to-moderate acne, scattered lesions, and skin too reactive for anything mechanical. Session-based, zero downtime. Celluma USA is 330,000đ per session; Photocare Premium is 480,000đ.

IPL for inflammation and post-acne redness

IPL for inflammation and post-acne redness

IPL acne treatment fires broad-spectrum pulsed light whose energy is absorbed selectively by the dilated vessels feeding an inflamed lesion, while also acting on acne bacteria. You get inflammation control plus gradual fading of the red marks that make a face look "still broken out" long after the acne has resolved. Session-based; skin may look mildly flushed for a few hours. 370,000đ per session.

Anti-inflammatory electro-infusion

Anti-inflammatory electro-infusion

Healthy skin is a waterproof barrier, so most of what you apply topically stays on the surface. A low-intensity current carries an anti-inflammatory serum through that barrier, without needles. Indicated for inflamed skin that is also dehydrated after strong actives. Normally built into the intensive inflamed-acne programs (MV2, MV3) rather than sold separately; no downtime, cost included in the course price.

Intensive inflamed-acne programs (MV2, MV3)

Intensive inflamed-acne programs (MV2, MV3)

When lesions are scattered across forehead, cheeks and chin rather than isolated, treating them one by one will always lag behind the rate at which new ones appear. These programs handle it in one visit: deep cleansing to clear blocked follicles, extraction of lesions that have genuinely formed a head, anti-inflammatory treatment for the rest, and barrier recovery before you leave. The more intensive tier (MV3) closes with an LED Celluma step for more severely inflamed skin. Session count depends on severity and response. Pricing: 1,250,000đ per session (MV2) or 1,600,000đ per session (MV3).

Prescription medication under a doctor's supervision

When inflammation is widespread or responds poorly to in-clinic treatment, your dermatologist may add medication prescribed specifically for your case, with follow-up visits to monitor the response. This sits outside the course price list.

Treatment process

5 steps, clinically led

1

Step 1: Free skin exam and multi-layer scan

A dermatologist examines you in person, then scans for what the naked eye misses: congestion not yet surfaced, oil levels, inflammation spreading below the surface.

2

Step 2: Grading the inflammation and building your plan

Your dermatologist identifies which type you have — papules, pustules or blind lesions — then sets out the method, expected sessions and cost before you agree to anything.

3

Step 3: Cleansing and anti-inflammatory treatment

The agreed plan is carried out: deep cleansing, then injection, LED, IPL or electro-infusion. Extraction only on lesions with a formed head; deeper ones are left alone.

4

Step 4: Post-treatment recovery

Treated skin is calmed and rehydrated in the same session. This step decides whether a lesion leaves a dark mark behind, so it is never skipped.

5

Step 5: Follow-up and adjustment

Your dermatologist reviews how your skin responded and adjusts the plan. Follow-up consultations sit on the free line in the price table above.

Aftercare

Make results last

What happens at home matters nearly as much as the treatment room: the same papule fades within days if left alone, or becomes a dark mark that takes months to treat if you press it nightly. Home care manages the surface — a cold compress reduces swelling you can see, but nothing sold over a counter reaches inside the follicle to switch off the reaction happening there.

  • Apply a cold compress through a clean cloth, up to 10 minutes at a time, to constrict vessels and bring swelling down
  • Do not touch, pick, needle or squeeze an inflamed lesion, including with shop-bought extraction tools
  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water; no scrubbing, no cleansing brushes over inflamed areas
  • Use an alcohol-free soothing gel, and pause strong actives until your doctor clears you to restart
  • Wear sunscreen daily, because UV stimulates pigment cells in exactly the area that was inflamed
  • After an in-clinic session, follow the recovery routine your dermatologist gives you

That is why a large, painful lesion is worth showing to a doctor early rather than nursing it for a fortnight. Already squeezed it? Stop touching the area, put nothing homemade on broken skin, keep it clean and dry. See a dermatologist promptly if swelling spreads within hours, pain keeps increasing, or you develop a fever or tender lymph nodes — signs of possible infection rather than an ordinary breakout.

Dark marks are the most common aftermath of squeezing an inflamed pimple

FAQ

Still have questions?

Should you pop inflammatory acne?
No. An inflamed lesion usually hasn't formed a head yet; squeezing pushes bacteria and inflammatory fluid deeper, spreading the lesion and raising the risk of dark marks and pitted scars. Extraction should only happen once a lesion has clearly formed a head, done by a technician or doctor with sterile tools.
What should I do about a blind pimple with no head?
Don't force it — there's no outlet for it to drain through. Reduce the inflammation first with a doctor-prescribed anti-inflammatory injection, LED or IPL. Once it settles, anything remaining can be extracted safely, and in many cases it resolves without extraction.
How do you reduce swelling from an inflamed pimple fast?
Apply a cold compress through a clean cloth for up to 10 minutes at a time, keep the skin clean, don't touch the lesion, and use an alcohol-free soothing gel. If it hasn't improved after 2–3 days, or swelling and pain spread, see a dermatologist — an anti-inflammatory injection is 100,000đ–300,000đ per lesion and usually flattens it within 1–2 days.
How long does inflammatory acne take to heal?
Small papules often settle on their own within 5–7 days if left alone; pustules can take longer. With a medical treatment plan, most cases show clear improvement within 4–8 weeks, depending on severity and individual skin.
What's the difference between inflammatory acne and cystic or nodular acne?
Inflammatory acne (papules, pustules) sits close to the surface, is smaller, mildly painful, and usually clears within about a week. Cystic or nodular acne is more severe: a hard lump deep under the skin, more painful, lasting weeks, with a higher risk of pitted scarring. The two are treated under different protocols at WeDo.
