Introduction to Erbium Laser

Erbium Laser is a solid-state laser using erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) as its active medium. It has been proven to deliver results comparable to the Fractional CO₂ Laser. First approved by the FDA in 1996, Erbium Laser has since established its effectiveness in skin resurfacing, improving acne scars, and refining enlarged pores.

How Erbium Laser Works

How Erbium Laser Works

- General mechanism: The Erbium Laser operates at a wavelength of 2940 nm, which is close to the peak absorption of water (around 3000 nm). When interacting with the skin, it induces vaporization and coagulation. Compared to CO₂ Laser, water absorption of the Erbium wavelength is 12–18 times higher, allowing most of the laser energy to be absorbed with minimal residual heat. As a result, thermal damage and the coagulation zone are significantly reduced, lowering the risk of side effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and prolonged redness. - Scar remodeling mechanism: Erbium Laser removes the epidermis and part of the dermis, triggering the skin’s natural healing response and promoting new tissue formation. Necrotic epidermal fragments are gradually replaced by new epithelial cells, filling in atrophic (indented) scars and improving skin texture. - Skin rejuvenation mechanism: In deeper skin layers, Erbium Laser generates temperatures above 50°C, reshaping the three-dimensional structure of collagen and causing collagen fibers to contract. Over the next 3–6 months, new collagen fibers replace the old ones, resulting in firmer, smoother skin with reduced wrinkles. Modern Erbium Laser technology delivers energy through numerous microthermal zones, preventing excessive heat concentration and minimizing skin damage.

Advantages

Why choose this treatment

Safety: Erbium Laser is FDA-approved for its safety and compatibility with human skin. Thanks to technological advancements, it significantly reduces common laser-related side effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, prolonged redness, and skin irritation.
High Precision: Erbium Laser precisely targets and removes damaged skin cells without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue.
Minimal Discomfort: The laser delivers energy through ultra-fine microthermal zones, dispersing heat evenly across the skin to minimize pain and discomfort during treatment.

Treatment process

8 steps, clinically led

1

Step 1: Examination and Scar Assessment

The first step in the treatment process is a detailed examination and assessment of the scars. The dermatologist will evaluate the scar type, location, and severity to develop an appropriate treatment approach.

2

Step 2: Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment, the dermatologist will design a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Since every scar condition is unique, the plan must be tailored accordingly. It typically includes the treatment methods, number of sessions, budget, and post-care instructions. This helps patients understand the process clearly and prepare effectively for recovery.

3

Step 3: Comprehensive Skin Cleansing (Makeup removal, facial cleansing, exfoliation)

Before treatment, proper cleansing is essential. Removing makeup, cleansing, and exfoliating the skin help eliminate dirt and dead cells, allowing better laser penetration and treatment effectiveness. The products used in this step must be carefully selected to avoid irritation.

4

Step 4: Numbing and Medical Preparation

Once the skin is ready, the dermatologist applies a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during treatment. Meanwhile, medical instruments are thoroughly prepared and sterilized to ensure patient safety. This step is crucial to prevent infection and unwanted complications.

5

Step 5: Disinfection and Final Check

Before starting the procedure, the numbing agent is removed and the treatment area is disinfected. This ensures a sterile environment and minimizes the risk of infection. The dermatologist also performs a final skin check to confirm the condition before proceeding, making any necessary adjustments to optimize treatment outcomes.

6

Step 6: Erbium Laser Treatment

Once preparation is complete, the dermatologist proceeds with the Erbium Laser treatment to address acne scars and enlarged pores. The procedure is performed with precision and care to ensure optimal results. Throughout the process, the patient’s condition is closely monitored to maintain safety and comfort.

7

Step 7: Post-Treatment Care Guidance

After the session, the dermatologist provides detailed instructions for post-treatment skin care. Patients are also supported through an online care group, connecting them directly with the dermatologist for continuous follow-up and guidance at home.

8

Follow-up Appointments

Regular follow-up visits are essential to evaluate the treatment results and monitor the healing process. During these visits, the dermatologist will assess the skin’s progress and make any necessary adjustments or recommend complementary procedures to enhance results. This ensures each patient receives the highest standard of care and achieves the desired outcome.

Aftercare

Make results last

Sun Protection

After treatment, the skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight. During the first two days, sunscreen should not be applied; instead, protect the skin carefully using thick cotton masks or dark, dense clothing. From the third day onward, WEDO recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher regularly — even when indoors.

Gentle Skincare Products

Use mild, non-irritating skincare products free from harsh chemicals to avoid triggering sensitivity. Opt for natural formulations without abrasive particles. Avoid active ingredients such as BHA, AHA, Retinol, Tretinoin, Vitamin C, Hydroquinone, Arbutin, or Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) for the first 1–2 weeks after treatment.

For hypertrophic scars, apply the prescribed topical treatment twice daily on the treated area as directed by your dermatologist.

Proper Post-Treatment Cleansing

– Within the first 24 hours after scar treatment:

Mild redness, tightness, or slight itching are normal skin reactions. To soothe and support healing:

  • Cleansing: Cleanse the skin once with saline solution and gently pat dry using a soft gauze.

  • Moisturizing: Apply a specialized moisturizer 2–3 times daily, using gentle strokes to avoid disrupting scabs or newly formed tissue.

– After 24 hours:

Continue following your dermatologist’s aftercare instructions to maintain hydration, protect the skin, and promote faster recovery.

– After 24 Hours

You may cleanse your face 2–3 times daily with clean water. Avoid the following:

  • Hot water: It can irritate the skin.

  • Harsh cleansers: Strong surfactants may dry out the skin and interfere with healing.

General Precautions

  • Limit exposure to dust and sweat to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Avoid heavy makeup to allow the skin to rest and recover fully.

Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration supports the healing process and keeps the skin moisturized. Patients are advised to drink at least 2 liters of water daily to aid scar recovery.

Avoid Touching the Treated Area

After about 5 days, the skin will naturally peel. During this phase, mild itching is normal — however, do not scratch or pick at the peeling skin, as this can lead to hyperpigmentation or scarring. Avoid exfoliation, steaming, or using products with strong peeling agents until the skin has fully healed.
