General Information
Children’s skin is very delicate, just one-fifth the thickness of adult skin. Fragile and sensitive skin, combined with a weaker immune system, makes children more susceptible to external factors causing dermatological diseases. Let’s explore some common skin conditions in children:
PRICKLY HEAT
In hot weather, children often suffer from prickly heat, a simple skin condition that can resolve on its own when the weather cools. However, if not cared for properly, it can lead to prolonged folliculitis.
Prickly heat often appears in clusters on areas that sweat a lot, such as the chest, back, forehead, or even in larger creased areas like the armpits and groin. In severe cases, it can cover almost the entire body. Lesions appear as red or pink papules, sometimes accompanied by small blisters or white pustules. The inflamed skin causes discomfort and itching, leading children to scratch, which can result in secondary bacterial infections.
ATOPIC DERMATITIS
Atopic dermatitis, also known as infantile eczema, is a common dermatological condition in children. It usually begins when children are 2–3 months old, characterized by red patches with blisters on the cheeks, forehead, and chin. The itching causes discomfort, and scratching leads to oozing lesions that increase the risk of secondary infections.
HAND, FOOT, AND MOUTH DISEASE
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus, commonly affecting children (over 90% of cases). Symptoms appear 3–6 days after exposure, starting with fatigue, mild fever (38–38.5°C), sore throat, and runny nose. These initial symptoms are followed by blisters in the mouth, commonly on the inner cheeks, gums, and sides of the tongue. These blisters quickly burst, forming painful ulcers that make eating and drinking difficult. Blisters may also appear on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks.
Patients can transmit the disease to others through respiratory droplets in the first week of illness.
IMPETIGO
Impetigo is a common skin condition in children, particularly in summer. It is more prevalent in developing countries with poor sanitation and overcrowded living conditions.
Impetigo typically affects exposed areas such as the face, hands, and legs but can also appear on the torso or other parts of the body. Non-bullous impetigo starts as a pink patch that develops into pustules and honey-colored crusts after rupturing. Bullous impetigo begins with small blisters that enlarge, becoming fluid-filled. These blisters rupture within 1–3 days, leaving behind moist, red patches that heal without scarring.
⚠️ Treating skin conditions in children requires extra care. If your child shows symptoms, consult a dermatological specialist immediately. Do not apply over-the-counter medications or follow unscientific advice to avoid severe complications.
