General Information
Does your skin feel… sensitive?
Sensitive skin reacts to ingredients in skincare products, chemicals, and environmental conditions (weather, extreme temperatures). Sensitive skin can also be caused by allergies (e.g., rashes from fragrances) or irritations (e.g., using acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid that result in rashes or cracks).
Sensitive skin tends to absorb more easily than regular skin. This has two main drawbacks: – Vital natural moisture escapes faster, and harmful ingredients penetrate your skin more easily. The good news is that you can improve this “damaged skin barrier.” The key is to treat your skin gently and keep it hydrated regularly. This is the most effective way to maintain healthy sensitive skin.
Here is a basic routine for gentle hydration care for sensitive skin. By following this simple routine, your sensitive skin will feel great in no time!
1. Use only gentle cleansers for your skin
Use a gentle skin cleanser, applying it only where necessary, and rinse with lukewarm (not hot) or cool water.
– For the body: You don’t need as much soap as you think—just use it on areas that get dirty or have body odors (armpits, groin, feet). If your skin is oily, you may also use a cleanser for oily areas like your back, neck, or chest.
– For the face: Use the mildest facial cleanser available.
Be cautious of the “squeaky clean” feeling after washing. That feeling indicates you’ve stripped away too much natural oil, potentially irritating your skin.
– For your hands: Since you wash them multiple times a day, keep unscented and gentle foaming soap nearby (except in situations like during COVID, when antibacterial soap is essential—just remember to apply hand lotion afterward, as we’ll discuss below in section 4).
2. Use hypoallergenic skincare products
Sensitive skin is prone to allergic reactions to ingredients such as:
– Fragrances
– Preservatives
– Anti-aging ingredients like Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C, and Retinoids
– Acne treatments like Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide
– Certain sunscreen ingredients (though zinc oxide products are much less likely to cause allergies)
To summarize, use gentle, hypoallergenic products for most of your daily skincare needs.
3. Wash and cleanse your skin properly
Bathing can either moisturize or dry out your skin. Remember that hot water removes more oil from your skin than warm or cool water, which isn’t ideal. Adjust your bathing frequency and water temperature to maintain your skin’s moisture. For soap and cleansers, see section 1 above.
4. Always apply moisturizer right after bathing/washing
You should apply moisturizer within three minutes of drying your skin. You can skip moisturizing your body unless it feels dry. Choosing the right product based on your skin type ensures you get adequate hydration without clogging pores or feeling greasy and heavy.
Don’t forget that your lips also need a layer of balm! Sensitive skin can be challenging, but the good news is that once you establish a routine and use the right products, you’ll enjoy healthier skin and feel much happier.
